Nurse who sacrificed her life to help Blitz victims finally honoured

Agatha Joan Credland was a nurse working at St Mary's Hospital in London in 1940. On September 7 of 1940 bombers scored a direct hit on St Mary's Hospital. Agatha Joan Credland was killed along with another nurse and five patients. She was buried in an unmarked grave in her home village of Sturton by Stow, ten miles north of Lincoln, in 1940 but it has never been clear why she was not given a headstone.

Even after 76 years from that incident, it remained this way until villagers decided recently to do something about it.

Clive Thompson of the Sturton by Stow Historical Society members were able to find Miss Credland’s last resting place thanks to burial records and the knowledge of older residents.

Now, decades after her death helping with the war effort, Miss Credland has been given her own headstone, funded by West Lindsey District Council.

Around 40 family members, many of whom had never met each other before, along with local residents, attended the special memorial service held at Stow church, on the 76th anniversary of her death.
