To mark Global Handwashing Day 2025, the Infection Control Unit of the National Hospital Kandy (NHK) organized a Leaflet Design Competition aimed at promoting awareness of proper hand hygiene among healthcare staff. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with 30 hospital units showcasing their creativity and commitment to infection prevention.
The Eye Male Ward (Ward 57) emerged as the winner of the competition, claiming first place for their outstanding design. The Eye Female Ward (Ward 55) and the Medical Intensive Care Unit secured second and third places, respectively. In recognition of their creativity and contribution, the top three winners were presented with special prizes.
The competition was judged by an esteemed panel comprising Dr. Ravindra Prasad Welivita, Deputy Director of NHK; Dr. Chandra Jayantha, Deputy Director of NHK; Dr. Madhumanee Abeywardena, Consultant Microbiologist of NHK; Dr. Aruna Jayasundara, Public Health Medical Officer of NHK; and Mr. Anura Jayamanna, Chief Special Grade Nursing Officer of NHK.
In addition to the design competition, the event featured presentations by representatives from cluster hospitals. All participants who submitted leaflet designs received appreciation gifts for their efforts.
The cluster hospital activities were conducted under the guidance of Consultant Microbiologist Dr. Muditha Abeykoon, with collaborative support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The event successfully highlighted the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare settings, combining education, creativity, and collaboration in the fight against infections.
