Hepatitis Types

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. There are two types of Hepatitis.
1. Non-viral Hepatitis
2. Viral Hepatitis

Causes of Non-viral Hepatitis
  • Alcohol : Hepatitis can be caused by liver damage from excessive alcohol consumption. This is sometimes referred to as alcoholic hepatitis. The alcohol causes the liver to swell and become inflamed.
  • Overuse of medication or exposure to poisons.
  • Autoimmune Disease : The immune system may mistake the liver as a harmful object and begin to attack it, hindering liver function.
Viral Hepatitis
There are five main types of hepatitis that are caused by a virus, A, B, C, D, and E - plus types X and G.

Hepatitis A and E are normally contracted from eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. Hepatitis B, C, and D are contracted through contaminated blood. These forms of hepatitis can be either acute or chronic. Types B and C usually become chronic.

Hepatitis A
This is caused by eating infected food or water. The food or water is infected with a virus called HAV (hepatitis A virus). Anal-oral contact during sex can also be a cause. Nearly everyone who develops Hepatitis A makes a full recovery it does not lead to chronic disease.

Hepatitis B
This is a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by the virus HBV (hepatitis B virus) and is spread by contact with infected blood, semen, and some other body fluids. The infected liver with hepatitis B swells. The patient can suffer serious liver damage due to infection, resulting in cancer. For some patients the hepatitis becomes chronic (very long-term or lifelong).

Hepatitis C
This type comes from the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is transmitted through direct contact with infected body fluids, typically through injection drug use and sexual contact. The liver can swell and become damaged.

Hepatitis D
Only a person who is already infected with hepatitis B can become infected with hepatitis D. It is caused by the virus HDV (Hepatitis D Virus). This is also called delta hepatitis. Infection is through contact with infected blood, unprotected sex, and perforation of the skin with infected needles. The liver of a person with Hepatitis D swells.

Hepatitis E
Hepatitis E is a waterborne disease caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). Hepatitis E is mainly found in areas with poor sanitation and is typically caused by ingesting fecal matter. A person can become infected by drinking water that contains HEV. The liver swells but there is no long-term consequence. Infection is also possible through anal-oral sex.

Hepatitis X
If a hepatitis cannot be attributed to the viruses of hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E, it is called hepatitis X. In other words, hepatitis of an unknown virus.

Hepatitis G
This is a type of hepatitis caused by the hepatitis G virus (HGV). Usually there are no symptoms. When there are symptoms, they are very mild.
