What is Cephalexin?

Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.


Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist / worsen or in addition to its needed effects, some unwanted effects may be caused by amoxicillin they may require medical attention.

Precautions
  • Do not use Cephalexin if you are allergic to Cephalexin, penicillins or other cephalosporins.
  • Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have any kind of kidney disease, stomach/intestinal disease (such as colitis).
  • The liquid form of this product may contain sugar. Caution is advised if you have diabetes
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed.
  • Cephalexin  passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Interactions

More than total of 40 drugs (420 brand and generic names) are known to interact with Cephalexin. Discuss with your doctor and pharmacist before taking Cephalexin.

Taking Cephalexin
  • Do not swallow or chew a dispersible tablet.
  • Do not take cephalexin in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
  • Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose.
  • Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Cephalexin will not treat a viral infection.
  • Store the liquid medicine in the refrigerator. Throw away any unused liquid after 14 days.
  • Store the tablets and capsules at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.
  • Take cephalexin exactly as it was prescribed for you and follow all directions on your prescription label.
  • This medication can cause you to have unusual results with certain medical tests. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using cephalexin.
  • Use cephalexin for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared.
Overdose

If someone has overdosed Seek emergency medical attention.
Symptoms of overdose may include
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Blood in your urine
