Hours per Week 42

Position Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for suitably experienced and passionate individuals to join the liver transplant unit at Austin Health on a permanent part-time basis.  Specifically, we are seeking Liver Transplant Nursing Coordinators to join our out-of-hours transplant coordination roster.  This function supports the 24/7 operation of the liver transplant unit and in doing so provides time-critical expert care to facilitate this life-saving service for the Victorian community.

Austin Health is the statewide provider of liver transplant services for Victoria, Tasmania and parts of southern New South Wales.  The Austin Liver Transplant Unit also provides surgical services for paediatric liver transplants performed at the Royal Children’s Hospital.  The unit performed its first transplant in 1988, and continues to grow and build a reputation for excellence.  In 2018 we performed over 100 liver transplants – the most we have ever completed in a year.

We are seeking flexible, solution-focused candidates who have a demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure, who will be able to support time-critical decision-making and arrange all of the components of retrieval and transplant surgery from end-to-end.  Working out of hours, this role requires candidates to be able to work independently and also appropriately escalate to and work with senior medical and surgical staff.

The after-hours roster for transplant coordination covers the period 4:30pm - 9am, 7 days per week.  Each out of hours period will be paid as a short shift, followed by a period of on-call until handover at the commencement of in-hours. The advertised hours (42) will be split between successful candidates on the after-hours roster, with people working on average 1-2 shifts per week. This role is able to be completed fully remotely (i.e. not on-site).

To be successful in this role, you will need:

Highly developed problem-solving and decision-making skills
Experience working in a relevant senior clinical role with demonstrated clinical acumen and evidence of strong clinical decision-making
Planning and prioritisation skills that enable you to manage multiple cases concurrently in a timely manner
The ability to negotiate and manage complex logistics and quickly and easily respond to changing circumstances
To make evidence-based and safe decisions in a time-critical manner, using established protocols and procedures
Highly developed communication skills that enable you to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders and convey critical information clearly and succinctly
The ability to work independently and maintain energy and focus out of hours for a fully operational service 24/7
An eye for detail to ensure all relevant donor and recipient risks are identified and that all required steps in the coordination process are completed
Resilience and the ability to remain calm under pressure
The capacity to work flexibly and work with peers to ensure the out-of-hours roster is fully covered, including providing leave cover (planned and unplanned)
Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and Post-Graduate qualification in a relevant area/specialty (or working towards)

If you are seeking a unique and highly specialised role where you get to work with the best in the field – this is the role for you.  You will be at the coal-face and play a pivotal role in the smooth execution of this life-saving surgery.

Work with us! Your reward is to work in a collaborative environment which will provide you with opportunities for ongoing training and development. Your benefits will include salary packaging, and employee assistance program.

All appointments are made subject to a satisfactory National Police Check conducted by Austin Health and if required, a Working With Children Check.  Austin Health is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to attracting and retaining a diverse workforce that reflects the community we serve.  Applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged.
