Sri Lanka’s First Ever Successful Heart Transplant Done in Kandy

Sri Lanka’s first heart transplant surgery was conducted successfully at the Kandy General Hospital. The heart transplant was done for a 34 year old woman living in the Anuradhapura area.

Part of the woman’s heart was not functioning well and a heart of a 24 year old brain dead youth was transplanted on her.

The two kidneys of the youth have also been transplanted on two other patients.

The woman who underwent heart transplant surgery and the other two underwent kidney transplant surgeries are undergoing treatment at the Kandy General Hospital. All three recipients are currently in the ICU at Kandy General Hospital, under medical observation.
